Hush, Little Baby

2024
9’ x 14” x14”
baby mobile motor, banana peels, twine, wooden wreath ring, sound

The banana tree only bears fruits once, which Vietnamese people had made into a metaphor for parents’ love and sacrifice. As the mobile turns and the lullabies are playing, the long braids of bananas drag on the ground slowly twisting together creating a harmonious loop. Through the juxtaposition of the mechanic sound and the sweeping on the floor, I explored my ongoing contradictory emotions as I simultaneously appreciated my mother's sacrifices yet resented the guilt she instilled within me.
